Artificial Intelligence methods can be extensively used in the fields of Civil Engineering Applications e.g., construction management, building materials, hydraulic optimization, geotechnical, and transportation engineering. Believe it or not, artificial intelligence is already ingrained into our lives. We may not be aware of it, but it is out there to make our lives easier. Artificial Intelligence utilizes computer processing to complete tasks that normally require human intelligence.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN CONSTRUCTION

Data is the core of artificial intelligence. With data collected at various cycles of the construction project across many different projects in construction firms, this provides valuable learning information for artificial intelligence applications. Artificial intelligence serves as a helpful tool for every phase of the construction project.

Prevent cost overruns

Most megaprojects go over budget despite employing the best project teams. Artificial Neural Networks are used on projects to predict cost overruns based on factors such as project size, contract type, and the competence level of project managers.

Historical data such as planned start and end dates are used by predictive models to envision realistic timelines for future projects. AI helps staff remotely access real-life training material which helps them enhance their skills and knowledge quickly. This reduces the time to onboard new resources into projects. As a result, project delivery is expedited.

AI for Better Design of buildings through Generative Design

Building Information Modeling is a 3D model-based process that gives architecture, engineering, construction professionals insights to efficiently plan, design, construct and manage buildings and infrastructure. To plan and design the construction of the building, the 3D models need to take into consideration the architecture, engineering, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plans and sequence of activities of the respective teams.

Risk Mitigation : Every construction project has some risk that comes in many forms such as quality, safety, time, and cost risk. The larger the project, the more risk, as multiple sub-contractors are working on different trades in parallel on job sites. There are AI and Machine learning solutions today that general contractors use to monitor and prioritize risk on the job site, so the project team can focus their limited time and resources on the biggest risk factor.

Surveying with Drones : It is not possible for construction managers to stay on the construction site all the time. By utilizing autonomous devices like drones on construction sites, construction managers can track and monitor the workflows and take appropriate action against those who disobey safety rules. Besides, we already know that drones capture photos in real-time. AI models can then compare these photos with the blueprints or 3D design models, to check for any fault.

In case the AI system identifies any errors, it can automatically send notifications to workers, managers, and engineers, allowing them to take immediate actions. AI-powered smart home will automatically learn the time when people enter a room and decide which lights to switch on, switch off, dim, brighten, etc.,

Modular construction and Prefab homes : Modular homes and prefab homes are unique and relatively new addition to the construction industry. In short, these homes can be built offsite saving time and resources, eventually, be delivered to the area of their choosing. AI could eventually make this process even more efficient, improving supply chain coordination, a crucial component to the success of these types of homes.

Smart 3D printing : Builders using smart 3D printing to construct homes is no longer just a long-off fantasy. 3D printing homes are becoming commonplace and thanks to artificial Intelligence this new disruption. Using smart robotics, contractors can build homes in hours rather than weeks or even years. Learning from simulations, builders might employ AI robots to construct homes in the near future.

Project Management : Managing a construction project has a host of factors to consider, with each one having the potential to delay a project for years. AI can manage all of these tasks without breaking a sweat. Future construction programs will manage entire projects providing builders with project risks, constructability, and the structural stability of various technical solutions for large commercial projects, single homes, and projects out of this world.
